Plan how the staircase will meet adjacent floors and whether the wood should match or intentionally contrast.
Review posts, handrails and balusters with the stair finish so connected work is planned in the right order.

Getting durable, solid stairs is about doing the job right from the beginning. First, we remove the old carpet, padding, tack strips, and all the staples holding it down. We inspect the underlying structure—the stringers and treads—to make sure they're sound. A solid foundation is non-negotiable for a job that's going to last.
Once everything is stripped back, we prepare the surface. This means securing any loose sub-treads to eliminate squeaks and making sure everything is level and clean. This prep work is critical for a professional finish and is something we don't rush.
We recommend solid oak treads for most homes in the Keswick area. It's tough, widely available, and matches well with most existing hardwood flooring. It's a proven material that stands up to constant use. While other woods like maple are an option, oak provides the best balance of cost and durability for a staircase.
For the risers (the vertical part of the stair), a common and clean look is to use paint-grade wood, finished in a durable white or off-white trim paint. This provides a nice contrast and is cost-effective. We can also cap or paint the side stringers to complete the look, depending on the style of your home and your budget.
A stair renovation is construction, and it creates some disruption. There will be noise from saws and nailers. We do our best to contain the work area to the staircase, using dust extractors on our tools and plastic sheeting where needed. We won't leave a mess. A typical project takes a few days, and we'll communicate the schedule with you clearly. Your quote will outline all the steps, from tear-out to the final coat of finish, so there are no surprises. "Rudy and his team was on time and on budget. They did a good job and installed flooring on our 2 storey condo. Their estimates were accurate and they finished the job on time. I would recommend them to anyone with a flooring project."
HomeOwner • 29 Nov 2012 • HomeStars"We had 3 quotes and 1 was double Rudy's out and the other guy said it couldn't be done. Rudy got it done and they look great. Spiral staircases, one with carpet that was removed and the other was a builders grade spiral to basement. Rudy was here every day at the exact time he said he would show up and was flexible to work with around our schedule. We were delayed a week, but once we got started everything was exactly on schedule. He custom matched the stain to our current floors and we are thrilled with the finished product. They cleaned up everyday at the end of the job sd were very respectful of our home and family life (2 small kids and pets). Absolutely would recommend Rudy and his guys"
