Trace the movement
Locate whether the sound comes from a tread, riser, stringer connection or a moving fastener.

Select fastening, blocking or joint treatment based on the moving connection—not the sound alone.

It almost always comes down to one simple thing: movement. Over time, as your house settles and the wood in your stairs expands and contracts with the seasons, tiny gaps can form. The squeak you hear is usually the sound of a wooden stair tread rubbing against the riser (the vertical part) or the stringer (the side board). It's just friction. Every time you step on that spot, the wood moves, rubs, and makes that familiar noise.
It's not usually a sign of a major structural problem, but it sure is irritating. Whether it's the top step that gets you every time or a whole symphony of creaks on the way down, the cause is the same. And luckily, the solution is straightforward for a pro who knows what to look for.
Fixing squeaky stairs isn't about just hammering in a few nails and calling it a day. We take a bit more care to make sure the fix is solid and lasts. Our whole process is focused on eliminating that wood-on-wood movement for good.
First, We’ll figure out exactly where the noise is coming from. We’ll walk the stairs with you to identify every problem spot. Depending on your staircase and whether it's carpeted or hardwood, We have a few different methods. We can often work right through the carpet using special screws that are designed to pull the tread tight to the supports below. For hardwood stairs, we can use a combination of strong construction adhesives injected into the gaps and small, concealed fasteners.
Our goal is always to fix the problem with the least amount of disruption to your home. We’re tidy, We’re respectful, and We’ll make sure you're happy with the results. If you're ready to finally get rid of those squeaks, give your Whitby neighbour a call at (647) 898-7839. Let's make your home quiet again.
