Trace the movement
Locate whether the sound comes from a tread, riser, stringer connection or a moving fastener.
Precision repair for every creak and groan.
Locate whether the sound comes from a tread, riser, stringer connection or a moving fastener.
Photos from above and below help determine which components can be reached without unnecessary finish damage.
Select fastening, blocking or joint treatment based on the moving connection—not the sound alone.

A squeak is the sound of friction. It's usually caused by two pieces of wood rubbing together under pressure. The main components are the treads (what you step on), the risers (the vertical boards), and the stringers (the diagonal supports). When the glue blocks shrink or the nails and screws used during construction loosen over time, gaps form. Every time you step on the tread, it moves slightly and rubs against an adjacent riser or stringer, creating that all-too-familiar sound.
Fixing a squeak correctly requires more than a hammer. Our process is specific and methodical to ensure the noise is gone for good. It starts with a careful examination of every single step to pinpoint the exact location and cause of the sound. We listen, we feel for movement, and we determine the best point of access.
If the underside of the staircase is accessible, like from a basement, the repair is often straightforward. We can add glue blocks and use construction adhesive to create a solid bond, or secure wood shims into gaps to stop any movement. From the top, the process requires more finesse. We use special tools to drive small-gauge trim-head screws through the tread into the riser or stringer below, pulling the components tightly together. The screw heads are as discreet as conditions allow and can be concealed with wood filler for a seamless finish. The key is using the right tool for the specific situation, not a one-size-fits-all approach.
We specialize exclusively in indoor stair repair. The controlled environment inside a home presents different challenges and requires different materials than outdoor stairs on a deck or porch. By focusing only on interior work, we can ensure every repair is tailored to the unique conditions of your home, using techniques that respect your finished floors, walls, and trim. This specialization guarantees a higher level of care and precision.
Repair expectations: Repair appearance depends on the condition of the surrounding floor and the availability of compatible matching material.
