The most common cause is a gap forming between the stair tread (the part you step on) and the riser (the vertical piece). It could also be the tread rubbing against the stringer, which is the side support board. Original nails can loosen over the years, and the wood itself can shrink. These small movements create noise that only gets worse over time.

The best repair is done from underneath the staircase, where we can add structural support blocks and use construction adhesive and screws to fuse the treads and risers together. This makes the staircase a single, rigid unit again, eliminating the movement that causes noise.
If we can't get underneath, we have professional techniques to secure the stairs from the top. We use specialized hardware designed to pull the components tight without leaving an obvious mark on your finished stairs. It's a durable solution, not a quick patch.

We can carefully detach the carpet as needed, perform the structural repair on the wood underneath, and then properly re-secure your carpet.
