Trace the movement
Locate whether the sound comes from a tread, riser, stringer connection or a moving fastener.
Your solution for quiet, solid stairs.
Locate whether the sound comes from a tread, riser, stringer connection or a moving fastener.
Photos from above and below help determine which components can be reached without unnecessary finish damage.
Select fastening, blocking or joint treatment based on the moving connection—not the sound alone.

Stair squeaks are almost always caused by friction. When you step on a stair, the components—the tread (the part you step on), the riser (the vertical piece), and the stringers (the side supports)—are supposed to be held tightly together. Over time, due to changes in humidity, house settling, or just everyday use, small gaps can form. When weight is applied, these wooden parts rub against each other or against a loose nail, creating that familiar creak. Simply injecting a bit of glue or driving another nail rarely solves the problem for good because it doesn't address the underlying movement.
Fixing a squeaky staircase correctly requires a methodical approach, not a quick guess. First, we carefully walk the stairs to identify the precise location and sound of each squeak. Is it at the front of the tread or the back? This detailed diagnosis is critical. Depending on the construction of your stairs and whether we have access from below, the repair method varies. If we can get underneath, we often secure the treads and risers to the stringers using construction adhesive and support blocks. This creates a solid, unified structure that eliminates movement and friction.
For stairs that are finished from below, we have to work from the top. This requires much more precision. We use specialized tools to make minimal intrusions, securing loose treads with trim-head screws that are as discreet as conditions allow once filled. We also use techniques to tighten the joint between the tread and riser without damaging the finish. Every step is planned and executed with the utmost care to protect your home and your stairs.
Our goal isn't just to stop the noise for a few weeks; it's to provide a long-term solution that restores the solid feel of your staircase. It’s about doing the job right the first time. A quiet staircase makes a home feel more solid and peaceful. When you're ready to get rid of those annoying creaks for good, give us a call at (647) 898-7839.
