Trace the movement
Locate whether the sound comes from a tread, riser, stringer connection or a moving fastener.

Select fastening, blocking or joint treatment based on the moving connection—not the sound alone.

A squeak is simply the sound of friction. It happens when two components of your staircase—usually wood—rub against each other under pressure. Over time, as a house settles and wood expands or contracts with humidity changes, tiny gaps can form. The most common culprits are the treads (the part you step on) rubbing against the risers (the vertical part) or the stringers (the side boards holding everything together). A nail that has worked its way loose can also be the cause, allowing for just enough movement to create that familiar noise.
Fixing a squeak correctly requires more than just squirting some glue into a crack. Our approach is systematic. First, we identify the exact location and cause of every single squeak. This involves walking the stairs, applying pressure to specific points, and sometimes using tools to inspect the underside if it's accessible. Once we know precisely where the movement is, we can apply the correct solution. This might involve re-securing a tread to a riser with specialized screws designed to pull the wood tight without leaving a visible mark. In other cases, we might use construction adhesive injected into the gap to create a solid, silent bond. We can also add small wood blocks or shims from underneath for added stability. Our work is clean, calculated, and focused on providing a lasting solution, not a temporary patch. We take great care to protect your floors and woodwork during the entire process, ensuring the only thing that changes is the sound your stairs make—or rather, don't make.
