Trace the movement
Locate whether the sound comes from a tread, riser, stringer connection or a moving fastener.
Locate whether the sound comes from a tread, riser, stringer connection or a moving fastener.
Photos from above and below help determine which components can be reached without unnecessary finish damage.
Select fastening, blocking or joint treatment based on the moving connection—not the sound alone.

A staircase is a complex structure. Squeaks typically happen when the stair treads (the part you step on) pull away from the stringers (the side supports) or risers (the vertical boards). Wood naturally expands and contracts with changes in humidity, and over the years, glue can dry out and nails can loosen. This creates tiny gaps, and when you step on the tread, the wood moves and rubs against another component, causing that familiar sound. It’s not just one thing; a single noisy step could have multiple friction points that need to be addressed correctly.
Fixing a squeak effectively starts with a thorough investigation. We don't just add a nail and hope for the best. We carefully walk the stairs, listening and feeling for movement to pinpoint every single problem area. The goal is to understand the unique construction of your staircase to apply the right fix. Depending on access, we can often work from underneath for a as discreet as conditions allow repair, adding structural support and adhesives to eliminate movement. If we must work from the top, we use specialized counter-snap screw kits that break off below the wood surface, leaving a hole so small it's easily concealed with wood filler. We choose the right method for the job, ensuring the repair is both strong and clean.
You can find many quick-fix videos online, but these rarely provide a permanent solution and can even damage your stairs. Simply hammering in another nail often misses the mark and can split the wood. Our process is different because it’s based on a careful assessment and a commitment to doing the job right the first time. We ensure every repaired tread is solid, secure, and most importantly, silent. We only work on indoor staircases, allowing us to focus on the fine details required for finished interior work. "Rudy was prompt and professional. The work was completed quickly and the floor came out wonderfully. I would definitely use them again for future flooring projects and recommend them to others."
HomeOwner • 2 Feb 2016 • HomeStars"My project was a little over 1000 sq ft of hardwood flooring, 350 ft of baseboard trim, 350 feet of door stop and 10 sq ft of tile in front of a fireplace. Upon completion, the rooms looked fabulous for 2 reasons. One was the natural warmth and elegance of wood flooring and secondly, the workmanship of Rudy and his crew. The quality and professionalism of the job was no more evident then where the tile and wood met. The tile was raised to the level of the wood thickness and the 2 met each other at an odd angle. The transition between the 2 surfaces was seamless and flawless and no transition pieces were required to hide any shortcomings. I was most impressed with this part of the job as only an experienced professional would do such a perfect job. In addition, Rudy and his crew were very courteous and cleaned up the mess after each days work. Even though I invited them to bring their saws and cutters indoors because it was cold, they insisted on doing this part of the job outdoor to minimise the mess in my home. I would definitely recommend Rudy and his crew to anyone seeking to have their flooring done. He is reasonably priced and offers quality work in exchange. Thanks Rudy and crew. Great Job."
