Trace the movement
Locate whether the sound comes from a tread, riser, stringer connection or a moving fastener.
Locate whether the sound comes from a tread, riser, stringer connection or a moving fastener.
Photos from above and below help determine which components can be reached without unnecessary finish damage.
Select fastening, blocking or joint treatment based on the moving connection—not the sound alone.

Stair squeaks are almost always caused by friction. When you step on a stair, your weight causes the tread (the part you step on) to move slightly and rub against another component, like the riser (the vertical piece) or the stringer (the side frame). This happens because the original fasteners have loosened or the wood has shrunk due to changes in humidity. It's a mechanical problem that requires a mechanical solution.
We fix squeaks by eliminating movement. First, we walk the stairs to identify every problem spot. From there, the approach depends on your staircase. If we can access the stairs from underneath, we apply construction adhesive and use wood blocks to brace the treads and risers. This creates a powerful, lasting bond that stops all movement. If we can't get underneath, we work from the top. We use specialized, small-head screws to lock the tread firmly to the stringer or riser. These screws are designed to countersink cleanly and are filled to be as discreet as conditions allow, especially on carpeted stairs. We never use quick fixes like foam injections that fail over time.
We work on all types of indoor stairs. For carpeted stairs, we have the tools to carefully access the subfloor, make the repair, and then professionally re-stretch and secure the carpet. For finished hardwood, our methods are precise to minimize any cosmetic impact. We target the source of the squeak directly so you don't have to deal with a major refinishing project. The end result is a staircase that feels solid underfoot and doesn't make a sound.
Repair expectations: Repair appearance depends on the condition of the surrounding floor and the availability of compatible matching material.
