What Causes Squeaky Stairs?
Stair noise comes from friction. It happens when the stair treads (the part you step on) rub against the risers (the vertical part) or the stringers (the side frame). This is usually caused by gaps that form over time as the house settles and wood components dry and shrink. Nails and fasteners used in original construction can also work themselves loose, allowing for movement that creates noise.
Our No-Nonsense Repair Method
We don't inject fillers that will just fail in a few months. Our goal is a permanent fix. First, we inspect the entire staircase to identify every problem spot, whether the stairs are carpeted or hardwood. The solution is to eliminate movement by re-securing the components properly.
Where possible, we work from underneath the staircase for the strongest and most carefully blended repair. We apply a high-strength construction adhesive into the gaps between treads, risers, and stringers. Then we use screws—not nails—to pull the components together tightly, creating a single, solid unit. This combination of adhesive and screws provides a durable solution that holds up to daily foot traffic. For stairs where we can't get underneath, we have specialized techniques to secure everything from the top with minimal cosmetic impact. The result is a staircase that feels solid underfoot and, most importantly, is quiet.
