Why Your Stairs Squeak
Stair squeaks happen for simple reasons. Usually, it's the stair tread (the part you step on) rubbing against the riser (the vertical piece) or the stringer (the side support). This friction is caused by gaps that form as the house settles and the wood ages. Old nails that have lost their grip are a common culprit, allowing for movement that creates noise. It’s a mechanical problem that needs a structural solution, not a quick fix.
Our Repair Process
We don't just hammer in more nails. Our first step is always a thorough inspection to pinpoint exactly where the movement is happening. If we can get access from underneath the staircase, that's the best route. We apply construction-grade adhesive to fill gaps and then use wood shims or reinforcing blocks screwed into place to eliminate movement completely. This creates a solid bond between the tread and the riser.
For stairs without access from below, we use specialized trim-head screws from the top. These screws are designed to pull the tread down tight to the joists and have very small heads that are as discreet as conditions allow once filled. This method is effective for both wooden and carpeted stairs, securing the components without major disruption.
