Trace the movement
Locate whether the sound comes from a tread, riser, stringer connection or a moving fastener.
Stop the squeak. Solid, quiet stairs.

Photos from above and below help determine which components can be reached without unnecessary finish damage.
Select fastening, blocking or joint treatment based on the moving connection—not the sound alone.

Most stair squeaks happen because of friction. Your indoor staircase is made of several parts: the treads (what you step on), the risers (the vertical part), and the stringers (the side supports). When you step on a tread, it flexes. If there's a gap between the tread and the riser or stringer, the wood rubs together and makes noise. This is usually caused by the house settling, changes in humidity causing the wood to shrink, or old nails that have lost their grip.
Fixing a squeak correctly means securing the loose components. We don't rely on quick fixes that will fail in a few months. First, we identify exactly where the movement is happening. If we have access from underneath (like in a home with an unfinished basement), we can add glue and blocking to brace the treads and risers directly. This is the strongest type of repair.
If we can't get underneath, we work from the top. We use specialized, snap-off screws that are designed to pull the tread down tight against the stringer or riser. These fasteners leave a very small hole that can be easily filled with wood putty to match your flooring, making the repair as discreet as conditions allow. We reinforce every problem spot to ensure the entire structure is solid. This method provides a permanent, durable solution that stops the movement and the noise.
A squeak is a sign of movement, and movement leads to wear. Leaving it alone often means the squeak gets louder and more frequent as the components loosen further. Fixing it not only brings peace and quiet back to your home but also ensures the structural integrity of your staircase, making it safer for everyone who uses it.
Repair expectations: Repair appearance depends on the condition of the surrounding floor and the availability of compatible matching material.

"My project was a little over 1000 sq ft of hardwood flooring, 350 ft of baseboard trim, 350 feet of door stop and 10 sq ft of tile in front of a fireplace. Upon completion, the rooms looked fabulous for 2 reasons. One was the natural warmth and elegance of wood flooring and secondly, the workmanship of Rudy and his crew. The quality and professionalism of the job was no more evident then where the tile and wood met. The tile was raised to the level of the wood thickness and the 2 met each other at an odd angle. The transition between the 2 surfaces was seamless and flawless and no transition pieces were required to hide any shortcomings. I was most impressed with this part of the job as only an experienced professional would do such a perfect job. In addition, Rudy and his crew were very courteous and cleaned up the mess after each days work. Even though I invited them to bring their saws and cutters indoors because it was cold, they insisted on doing this part of the job outdoor to minimise the mess in my home. I would definitely recommend Rudy and his crew to anyone seeking to have their flooring done. He is reasonably priced and offers quality work in exchange. Thanks Rudy and crew. Great Job."

The second was Rudy, who came to my house, measured everything, recommended some products and gave me solid quote so I knew exactly what the job would cost and the time it would take. Very professional. His installers were equally as professional and completed the job with great fit and finish. I would definitely recommend Delight Flooring to anyone who asks and I would surely call them for my future flooring needs. KC"
