Trace the movement
Locate whether the sound comes from a tread, riser, stringer connection or a moving fastener.
Finally, some peace and quiet in your home.
Locate whether the sound comes from a tread, riser, stringer connection or a moving fastener.
Photos from above and below help determine which components can be reached without unnecessary finish damage.
Select fastening, blocking or joint treatment based on the moving connection—not the sound alone.

Most of the time, a squeaky stair isn't a huge deal, but it's definitely trying to tell you something. Usually, the noise comes from wood parts rubbing against each other. Over the years, as your house settles and the humidity changes, the wooden treads (the part you step on) and risers (the vertical part) can shrink a tiny bit. This creates small gaps, and when you step on the stair, the wood moves and rubs against another piece of wood or a nail. That's the squeak you're hearing.
Sometimes it’s a tread that's come loose from the riser behind it. Other times, the staircase itself might be slightly loose from the main frame of the house. Finding the exact source of the squeak is the first step, and honestly, it’s the most important one.
We don't believe in one-size-fits-all solutions. Our first job is to play detective and find exactly where the movement is happening. Once we've pinpointed the culprit, we get to work on a real fix, not just a temporary patch. This usually involves securing the loose components without making a mess of your staircase.
We can often work from underneath if your basement is unfinished, adding braces or blocks for solid support. If we can't get underneath, don't worry. We have special tools and techniques to secure the treads from above, even on carpeted or finished hardwood stairs, with minimal disruption. It’s all about reinforcing the structure so there's no more movement, and therefore, no more noise. you'll work directly with our flooring team, so we'll treat your home with care and make sure everything is cleaned up perfectly before we leave. You'll just be left with the sweet sound of silence.
